Car Seats
Your child will go through several car seats before they are able to use regular car seat belts safely. Most
babies start out in a rear facing infant car seat until they are one year old and at least 20-22 lbs. The most
optimal position for the car seat is in the rear seat. If the child reaches 20 lbs. before age one they will need a
convertible seat rear facing.
Children graduate into a forward-facing 5-point harness convertible seat at 20 lbs. and one year old. This seat
will last until the child weighs 40 lbs. Once the child reaches 40 lbs. and 4 years old, they will need to be in a
belt-positioning booster seat. The adult lap and shoulder belt system alone will not fit most children until they
are at least 4’9” tall and weigh about 80 lbs.
The Jefferson County Health Department has programs through Safe Kids and grants through the state that
assist people in getting a car seat.
